‘Naked’ view of Church Times

Shrewsbury Chronicle, 16 August 2001

Controversy surrounding the sculpture of a Naked Christ displayed in Shrewsbury Abbey has now hit the front page of the Church Times.

A picture of the piece by local artist Michele Coxon appeared with an article headed ‘Shocked by Abbey Sculpture’.

And the story read: “A sculpture of Christ made of sheep bones, rusty metal and driftwood is getting approval from visitors to Shrewsbury Abbey, despite accusations that it is blasphemous and unsuitable for children.”

Abbey administrator Roger Knight said that virtually all the comments in the visitor’s book about the Naked Christ were positive.

The Chronicle reported last week that Abbey bosses had revealed a dramatic increase in visitor numbers due to media coverage of the sculpture.

The exhibition formed part of the Visual Art Festival which ran from August 1 to 11.
