Animal bone Christ sculpture called obscene

ananova.com, 3 August 2001

Visitors to Shrewsbury Abbey want a 7ft sculpture of Christ made from crushed animal bones removed.

The Naked Christ sculpture has been called obscene and unfit for a place of worship.

Church leaders say the piece is thought-provoking and raises awareness of the suffering felt by Jesus.

The sculpture is made from sheep bone, rusted metal and paper tissue. It is meant to represent Christ’s decaying body.

It was created by artist Michele Coxon, using material collected from the Welsh hills.

The sculpture forms part of Shrewsbury’s two-week arts festival, reports the Daily Telegraph.

One visitor, Sarah Burns, said it was totally needless and very gory. Another said it was disgusting and deeply disturbing.

A spokesman for the abbey confirmed it had received complaints about the sculpture.
